You will be pleased to know that British 'weeds' too are making a comeback - and wildflowers are very trendy right now. And the secret to successful windowboxes is getting the biggest one you can accommodate, and planting them with drought-resistant plants like Mediterranean herbs (thyme, marjoram, maybe prostrate rosemary if you have room) rather than traditional bedding: they look better, they last longer, they require fewer resources and a lot less watering, and you get fresh flavouring for your cooking. Much more useful than a petunia :D
I grow zonal geranium in plastic window boxes in California. They flower for months and are virtually impossible to kill (I don’t water them every week, despite no rain for 9 months of the year here.)
Yes plant native in your backyard! But nothing wrong with additional beauty and experimentation in window boxes.
Thank you for this. I've been trying to come to terms with the struggle to nurture annuals in the window boxes on my deck. Seriously considering just growing herbs in them.
Hands up! I'm an annoying British gardener!

Congratulations on your window box success! And I totally agree with your philosophy:)

You're welcome! Though I hate to say, herbs also failed in our window boxes. They tended to bolt before we could use them. Let me know how it goes.
